J’ouvert is a large annual street party that celebrates Caribbean culture. This event usually takes place around dawn on Labor Day. Unfortunately Monday morning Brooklyn streets was
the scenery of a terrible tragedy. Although Mayor De Blasio took precautions and sent hundreds of police officers to look for the safety of the patrons during the parade, it was not enough and the festival turned into chaos around 3:45 am morning. Two people were shot and killed; two others were injured as a result of the J’ouvert festival in Brooklyn.
According to the New York Post, on Monday morning De Blasio gave a statement thinking about shutting down the festival, but the NYPD Brooklyn President, Eric Adams refused. He declared
that “We need to be clear: New York City and NYPD do not surrender to violence, violence surrenders to us”.
