I recently had the pleasure of interviewing a new and rising designer to the fashion world, TANGEE of TANGEE’S CLOSET who creates everything crochet couture. Tangee shares her early memories of learning how to crochet from her mother while living in Germany at the age of twelve. If anything after learning a little more about TANGEE OF TANGEE’S CLOSET you will be running to place orders, all while being inspired by her motivation and personal strength. She is a sister (phenomenal member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.) that is SETTING A STANDARD AND KEEP IT!!!
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU STARTED YOUR LINE?
I actually was a Mental Health Counselor and enjoyed doing it for a while but then I started to feel drained spiritually and wanted a change. I knew that I had a greater calling and was in search of what it was.
WHEN DID YOU START CROCHETING?
I was taught by mom while I was growing up in Germany at 12. We didn’t have TV and it sometimes took a long time to receive VHS tapes that would be coming from the US, so I often got bored and into things. My mom wanted to keep me busy and thought that by teaching me to crochet I wouldn’t have so much time on my hands. Little did I know that this skill would become my passion and what I believe to be my calling.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME TANGEE’S CLOSET?
Well I originally just wanted to highlight my name TANGEE because it means something unique but he name was already taken. So I thought about my journey and where I kept the pieces I had been privately working on for over five years. I crocheted pieces during my free time while maintaining a full-time job but when completed I would put them in a chest in my closet for safe keeping. So it only made sense when I looked into my closet and say my collection of pieces to call it TANGEE’S CLOSET.
SO ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT THE PIECES WE ARE NOW GETTING A TASTE OF WERE CREATED YEARS AGO?
(LAUGHS) To be exact 5 years old. Many people have asked me how long it took me to prepare for the shows, but these pieces have been in the Closet and now are ready for their reveal. I love deigning pieces for people that I know will look good on them. If I feel that your body type wouldn’t be suited for a piece you may be considering I will redirect you in another way.
WHEN DID YOU HAVE YOUR AHA MOMENT?
I would say it was around September 2015 when I went to take some of the pieces to my stylist to see if it would be well received; And it was. And from then I just started to grind to make it happen. I was accepted to do my first fashion week in October 2015 at the RVA Fashion Night Out and have been going since then. I can feel that what I’m doing right now is my destiny because of how it feels in my spirit.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO OTHER WOMEN OUT THERE?
Follow your spirit because my journey through everything to this has made me spiritually stronger. You have to pray more and trust that God will lead you in the direction. We have a hard time with letting whatever is going to happen, just happen in its own time. So just step out on faith. When I was at a crossroads and didn’t want to do my full-time anymore but wasn’t sure of what and how, I heard a small voice whisper to me that “I’ve GIVEN YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEEDED”. When I just learned to trust God and build my relationship with him everything else fell into place. Every new day is a new lesson. I guess that would be my advice. I also have a Vision Board that serves as an inspiration into my future goals- I speak life into what I want!
WHERE DO YOU SEE TANGEE’S CLOST IN THE FUTURE?
I would love to become an International name. I would like to work with women in Africa to help create my clothing line and teach them a skill for self-sufficiency all at the same time by earning sustainable wages. I believe that it would be women in third-world countries that would benefit from an opportunity to help create beautiful crochet pieces. Sometimes I feel like I am being pulled in different directions but I have to stay true to the “originals” and my vision for my brand.
WHAT STARS COULD YOU SEE WEARING YOUR BRAND?
Oh! So I LOOOOOve Neo Soul .. it would totally have to be Solange, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Janelle Monae to begin with. These ladies just exude classy and carries the same vibe as me (TANGEE); it’s what TANGEE’S CLOSET conveys…

On Oct 15. We will be at the RVA Fall Fashion Show and Dec. 3 in Suffolk, VA we will at the Toys for Tot’s Fashion Show.
