If you haven’t seen it before on The Late, Late Show, James Corden really enjoys karaoke and he really enjoys carpools and he super enjoys it when he can do both at the same time.
As the host for The 70th Annual Tony Awards, Corden has decided his opening to the awards show will be a carpool karaoke number with some of the biggest stars on Broadway. To prepare for such an amazing production of carpool karaoke, Corden decided to have a practice run on The Late, Late Show for the June 6th episode.
The eleven minute video of amazing first started off with Lin-Manuel Miranda, writer and star of the Broadway show Hamilton: An American Musical which has been nominated for a record-breaking sixteen Tony nominations #UnheardOf. The two rapped together to some of the more popular numbers from Hamilton and Miranda had a fun time changing some of the lyrics to his show.
Later on, Audra McDonald (the Meryl Streep of Broadway), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), and Jane Krakowski (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) entered the car, and that’s when the real fun started. The five stars had the world’s most Broadway response to a RENT song ever:
And then got super duper into character, performing their last song of the ride One Day More from Les Miserables. In which Krakowski played Eponine in all her unrequited glory while Ferguson and McDonald played Marius and Cosette, the star-crossed lovers of the show.
The entire thing was a glorious teaser for the real Broadway Carpool Karaoke that will be taking place at the Tony Awards this Sunday, June 12th. Be sure to watch!
