John Legend is adding another producer credit to his name with new series about Black Wall-street on WGN, this story is based on another important piece of American history – the infamous destruction of a wealthy Black community in Tulsa, Ok dubbed the ‘Black Wall Street..’
Following World War I Black U.S. citizens living in segregated Tulsa, OK created a wealthy economic enclave so successful it was known across the country as the “Black Wall Street.’
That is, until a mob of white men stormed the neighborhood on May 31 and June 1 in 1921 and lynched over 300 men, women and children and burned hundreds of businesses to the ground.
Of course no one was ever charged, the area never recovered and no compensation was given to the families affected by this. John Legend’s Black Wall Street is currently in development.
