So the latest DC Comics film, Suicide Squad just got a PG-13 rating and people aren’t too happy about that and I can’t say I blame them.
Deadpool, a Fox variation of a Marvel film came out this year and was R-rated. The movie followed anti-hero, Deadpool as he fought to get his girlfriend back, broke the fourth wall, kicked a lot of butt, and made tons of dick jokes while breaking bones. The movie needed the R-Rating to be funny. Many people are comparing Suicide Squad – a movie about a bunch of DC Comic’s worst villains being forced to save the world or die trying – to Deadpool and who can blame them?
The film has Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn (his super crazy girlfriend), Will Smith as Deadshot, and many more super famous people playing super evil people, and audiences were really looking forward to seeing The Joker and Harley kick butt, make dirty jokes, and then violently slaughter a few more people. Now that the film has a PG-13 rating, it’s less likely that the film could be quite as fabulously violent as it once had the opportunity to be.
Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice had the same problem, and the Bluray set to be released in July will have an extended edition of the film that’s Rated-R and will possibly be better because of it. Still, I don’t think people are going to have to worry about how violent the movie will be in context of how good that will make it.
Lest anyone forget, The Dark Knight Batman film starring Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as The Joker was PG-13, and that movie was amazing. The violence was pretty fantastic, the bad guy was super creepy (let’s not forget, the late Heath Ledger won an Oscar for that role) and the movie, overall was absolutely brilliant. Let’s not forget that it’s hard for a movie to be successful if it’s Rated-R, the audience becomes much smaller that way. PG-13 movies allow for a way bigger audience in the long run.
Yes, Suicide Squad has a different air about it, that’s going to make it a lot more about the craziness of the characters and the dialogue between them as they’re killing people. But if The Dark Knight can make PG-13 work, I’m positive that Suicide Squad can make it work as well.
