Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, also the HUD secretary, made an awkward statement today during his speech. He stated, “There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less.”
Really?! Is it absolutely necessary to refer to slaves as “immigrants” ? I THINK NOT.
During the slave trade, many Africans were stolen and forced into leaving their homeland. It was never their intention to be an “immigrant”. Nevertheless, Carson should have chosen a better word if he was going to refer to slaves as immigrants. Usually, immigrants are people who are WILLING to leaving their country to permanently reside in another. Slaves, however, did not want to be captured and leave their homeland, they were FORCED to leave.
Immigrant:(noun) One who comes to live permanently in a foreign country
Slave: (noun) a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey
I believe the intelligent Dr. Ben Carson should be careful and mindful of his word selection when giving a speech. It’s not like you can take words back, once you say it……. well, you know the rest.
Here’s the small segment of Dr. Ben Carson as he is referring to slaves as immigrants.
